Why Having A Look?

The title is really two questions at once. "Why start a blog?" and "Why name it 'Having A Look'?" I'll attempt to answer them in that order.

First, I've been thinking about having my own blog for a while. My wife and I currently share a blog but it's mostly filled with vacation reports and the like. With my own blog, I'll feel more comfortable taking on different topics. Other than that, my main goal is to improve my writing. I believe that having a public forum will help me focus on that.

The answer to the second question is that "to have a look" is one of my favorite expressions I've ever heard. I first heard it in Australia from some older gentlemen living in a small, out-of-the-way town. I told him I was on a trip around the world and he nodded his head and said, "Havin' a look, yeah?" I thought the phrase perfectly captured the nature of my trip. I wasn't out to save the world or to undergo some complete metamorphosis. I just wanted to learn, first-person, a bit more about the planet I live on.

I'm thinking that this blog will lurch from topic to topic at first. Included will be sports, politics, technology, philosophy, economics, and anything else that appears on my mental radar. Maybe this sort of potpourri approach will last, or maybe the blog will find a focus over time. I guess we'll see!
